Family Trip to Europe

Hey everyone, it’s Andrew, your official family vacation reporter!

You might remember me from my first report on Walt Disney World during the holidays. Now, I’ve set off on my first international adventure to Europe, learning more about my heritage in Scotland and Germany!

We’re splitting my review into two parts, and the first stop on my journey is Scotland. Let me tell you, Edinburgh is amazing, and there’s so much to do here! If you like cool old castles, yummy food, and Harry Potter, this city is perfect for you.

Here’s what you don’t want to miss when you visit Edinburgh!

1. First, Learn How to Say “Edinburgh”

Okay, before you even start exploring Edinburgh, you have to get the name right! It’s not like Pittsburgh at all. Go on YouTube and search for a Scottish person saying “Edinburgh.” It’s funny and a little tricky, but you’ll sound super cool when you get it right!

2. Must-See: Edinburgh Castle

You have to go to Edinburgh Castle—it’s huge and super old! It’s one of the oldest castles in Europe, and when you look out from the battlements (that’s a fancy word for the walls of the castle), you can see the whole city! My favorite part was St. Margaret’s Chapel, which is the oldest part of the castle. It’s tiny but so cool. You also get to walk in the vaults where prisoners were kept—kind of spooky, but also awesome!

Tip: You should get your tickets online before you go because the castle gets really crowded, and when I went, they ran out of tickets for the same day. So, don’t forget to plan ahead!

3. Must-Eat: Fish and Chips

Okay, so you can’t leave Edinburgh without trying fish and chips. It’s like the national dish of Scotland! It’s fish and fries, but way better than anything you’ve ever had. And they always come with peas. I’m not a huge fan of peas, but I ate the fish and chips everywhere I went, and it was always amazing! One thing to know is that only pubs that serve food let kids inside, so if you’re looking for a place to eat, make sure it’s a pub that has food.

4. Must-Do: The Potter Trail

If you’re a Harry Potter fan like me, you have to do the Potter Trail walking tour. It’s a whole tour about the places that inspired J.K. Rowling to write the books! You get to see the café where she wrote parts of the first book, and there’s even a graveyard with a tombstone that inspired the name “Tom Riddle.” Plus, you’ll learn some cool spells and fun facts about the books. It was so much fun, and I can’t wait to tell all my friends about it!

If you like history, magic, and fun, Edinburgh is definitely the place to take your family. I had the best time with my parents!

Be on the lookout for Part Two of my report of Germany on the S2T blog later this week!
